the Stage II Interceptor engine and this exciting new power
unit just bristles with exclusive features.
Entirely new crankcase.
Integral oil tank below engine deeply finned,
giving super slip-stream cooling.
Completely new lubrication system.
New contact breaker drive.
New high performance cams with exclusive quickly-
detachable fitting. (No dismantling necessary for
camshaft change.)
New carburettors giving much improved perfor-
mance over
whole range
When it was announced that Enfield Precision Engineers Ltd.—
a company famous in England for the manufacture of aircraft and
guided weapon components— were to take over the complete
manufacture of Royal Enfield Interceptor motorcycles instead of
producing only the engine, everyone knew that something special
would follow, and here it is, a completely new Stage II Interceptor.
This machine is not mass produced but is made under tool-
room conditions in a precision engineering factory where only a
limited number are made each year embodying all the skill and
craftsmanship for which England is famous.
The NEW Royal Enfield Interceptor, due to its perfect balance, weight
distribution and lightness, handles more like a “500” than a “750.”
It is really a street scrambler with unexcelled roadholding. Its long
stroke engine permits higher top gear ratio, quicker acceleration and
top performance than most other vertical twins. Dependable oversize
brakes, massive forks and rear suspension, Dunlop K70 tires, are there
for better cornering and riding on dry or wet roads. These features help
to make RE the SAFE bike.
Take a good look at the mechanical features—some exclusive, such
as the neutral finder which by touching a lever with the right heel auto-
matically throws the massive, oversize gearbox into neutral. No irritat-
ing up and down gearshift lever movements are necessary. Cylinder
heads and cylinders are individual castings for E-Z servicing, better
cooling and lower replacement costs. Engine and gearbox bearings are
oversize, with long life assurance.
Oil—oh, yes! That vital necessity is carried in the finned (for better
cooling) lower part of the crankcase, just like a car! The camshaft is
quickly removable without disturbing timing gears. The Albion gearbox
(E. & H. P. Smith Co., who own Enfield, and 30 other industrial enter-
prises, also own Albion Co.) is mounted separately from the engine.
If breakage of a gearbox or crankcase should ever occur, you buy one
separate unit only, not a complete lower power plant unit, necessary
with many other makes. This feature also makes it easier to change
gear ratios with a wider selection of sprocket sizes.
Royal Enfield is designed for low cost operation for the owner, as
some of the world’s best cycle engineers (many of 20 to 30 years RE
service) are constantly on the inspection lines to keep things correct.
It is the really tough, high performance British bike built by loyal dedi-
cated workers in a unique underground factory at Bradford-on-Avon
(Westwood) England, where quality control has first priority.
Take a good look at the new Interceptor, a bike with the agility of a
Ferrari, the toughness of a Mercedes-Benz and the excellent workman-
ship of the good British type workmen who produce Rolls Royce, air-
craft engines, Rover cars, Leyland buses, and other high quality British
products.
You can buy cheaper, but you can’t buy better quality and perform-
ance. If it had four wheels we’d call it a Rolls Royce! We think it’s just
that good!
